On April 3, 2024, a diving team faced a dire situation in the Plura cave system, Rana, Norway. Divers Alert Network has begun investigating the tragic accident to understand the events leading up to the incident.
A Day Like Any Other
The Plura cave system, renowned for its deep, labyrinthine passages, is a favorite among Scandinavia’s cave divers. The water temperature can plunge to a frigid 36°F in winter, making it a challenge even for seasoned divers. On this day, three experienced rebreather divers embarked on a routine check-up dive.
Into the Depths
Leading the team was Diver 1, followed by Diver 2, with Diver 3 bringing up the rear. Their dive began smoothly, reaching a depth of 110 feet before surfacing in an air-filled chamber after 30 minutes. After a brief rest, they began their descent once more.
The Descent into Chaos
As they ventured deeper, Diver 2’s light failed, causing Diver 1 to assist in deploying a backup. Suddenly, Diver 3’s light began moving erratically, accompanied by frantic screams. Diver 1 turned to find Diver 3 in the throes of severe convulsions.
A Desperate Struggle
Diver 3’s mouthpiece was closed but not in his mouth, indicating a failed bailout attempt. Diver 1 tried to secure Diver 3’s airway as he continued to seize. With the exit 800 feet away, Diver 1 swam frantically, signaling Diver 2 to alert the surface team.
A Race Against Time
Despite Diver 1’s efforts, Diver 3’s convulsions persisted for three agonizing minutes. Unable to unclench Diver 3’s jaw, Diver 1 swam him out of the cave. Surface support met them and helped bring Diver 3 out of the water.
Final Efforts
CPR began immediately, with oxygen and an AED deployed within minutes. Despite two hours of intense resuscitation efforts by both the dive team and EMS, Diver 3 could not be revived. The Plura cave had claimed another victim.
