Spring Characteristics

• Circular Spring Pool: Hornsby Spring boasts a circular spring pool measuring 155 feet from north to south and 147 feet from east to west.
• Vent Depth: At its vent, the spring reaches a depth of 34.5 feet, offering a glimpse into its underwater wonders.
• Water Clarity: The spring’s crystal-clear waters have a slight greenish-blue hue, creating a serene and inviting ambiance.
• Underwater Limestone Ledge: On the north side of the spring, you’ll find an underwater limestone ledge beneath a floating walkway. Algae patches gracefully adorn the limestone substrate.
• Spring Run: The spring run extends for approximately 0.9 miles, with dimensions of 15 feet in width and depths of up to 5 feet. It flows westward, eventually joining the Santa Fe River.
• Flow Variability: During the first visit by the Florida Geological Survey (FGS), the spring was not flowing. However, during a subsequent visit, a small spring boil was visible near the wooden walkway.
• Natural Setting: Hornsby Spring is situated on the edge of the lowland floodplain of the Santa Fe River. The floodplain is adorned with a lush forest of cypress, gum, and maple trees. On the east side of the spring, high ground rises steeply to 6 feet above the water level, gently ascending to approximately 15 feet, creating a rolling sand hills terrain. The uplands offer an open and grassy landscape.
