Depending on the season, you might be treated to the sight of vibrant and large groups of butterflies along the way—a delightful natural spectacle. At the road’s end, you’ll find ample parking and convenient tables to assist you in preparing for your underwater excursion.

Tortuga’s Mysterious Basin

The heart of Sistema Tortuga unveils itself as a circular hole in the ground, measuring roughly 20 feet in diameter. Expect limited visibility in this underwater realm, emphasizing the need for cautious navigation. To ensure your safety, the guideline begins at the surface, securely tied to a log at the water’s edge. It is imperative to maintain physical contact with this guideline at all times during your descent.

Discovering Hidden Treasures

As you progress, you’ll navigate the slope of the breakdown pile and pass through a restriction, where visibility dramatically improves on the other side. The cave’s initial chamber boasts impressive floor-to-ceiling columns, a sight that leaves a lasting impression.

Choose Your Path

Once you and your fellow explorers clear the restriction, you have options for further exploration. You can follow the main line, which extends approximately 1,200 feet into the system, leading to a T junction on the right that ultimately dead ends 250 feet further in. Alternatively, you can opt for the first “T” to the left, just a few hundred feet from the entrance. This route takes you to a saltwater zone at around 85 feet, where a guide can lead you on a small circuit or deeper into one of the numerous offshoot tunnels.

Important Decompression Note

Keep in mind that as you venture to greater depths, decompression becomes a factor. If you choose to explore the saltwater zone, remember that you’ll accrue deco time, necessitating decompression in the tannic water.
