Embarking on the journey to Volusia Blue Spring is a straightforward endeavor. From the junction of US 17/92 and SR 44 in Deland, travel a scenic 5.3 miles south on US 17/92. Upon reaching Orange City, take a westward turn (right) onto CR 4142 (French Avenue), continuing for approximately 2.5 miles until you arrive at the welcoming embrace of Blue Spring State Park.

The park road effortlessly guides you to the spring parking area. As you explore further, you’ll find the spring itself situated at the head of Blue Spring Run, a mere 0.25 miles north of the parking area. Access is granted through an elevated wooden boardwalk that gracefully meanders along the spring run’s eastern bank.

A Descriptive Odyssey

Volusia Blue Spring presents itself with a circular spring pool nestled within a conical depression, characterized by a striking central boil. The spring pool extends 135 feet from north to south and 105 feet from east to west. As you peer into its depths, you’ll discover a spring depth of 20 feet, measured over the vent.

The spring’s bottom boasts a composition of limestone and sand, while the vent takes shape as an elongated fissure within the limestone. Gazing at the water, you’ll be greeted by its clear blue appearance, slightly adorned with a greenish tinge. The presence of algae is pervasive both within the spring and along its run. During an October 2001 visit, no other aquatic vegetation was observed.

The spring’s sandy banks rise steeply to a height of approximately 15 to 20 feet above the water level, framing the picturesque scene. The spring run mirrors this terrain, featuring steep sandy banks as it flows south and west for approximately 1,050 feet, ultimately joining the St. Johns River.
